The volley principle refers to how intermediate sound frequencies (approximately 500–4000 Hz) are represented in the auditory system. At these frequencies: • Individual neurons cannot fire fast enough to match the sound frequency directly. • Instead, groups of neurons fire in a phase-locked manner, meaning they collectively encode the frequency by pooling their activity in synchrony with the sound wave. This mechanism allows the auditory system to accurately encode frequencies that exceed the firing rate of individual neurons.

Hair cells have a maximum rate they can fire at - and that rate is far lower than the frequency of some of the sounds they might have to encode - and yet they can still encode them.
